notes on the text

Dear readers; I am not interested in what you have not seen. Example; I am not interested in knowing that you have lived on Lopez Island for 50 years, and have never seen a Goshawk there. Are you interested in knowing some of the details of my NOT winning the lottery, during my 25 years of playing the contest? Of course not. Also I am not interested in any comments, or questions relating to any of my Northern Goshawk Blog Sites. In other word, you will be wasting your time sending any message to my blog sites. If you wish to join me in the field, I will present a complete understanding of how to "find, identify, and observe Northern Goshawks". My cell - 360 420 9320. Nearly all of my field work is in Anacortes and North Whidbey Island. During winter my field work is usually in Tucson. At other times - Coastal Bend Texas, or San Diego area; both areas containing many Goshawks. A note about the text - Pioneer Trails RV Park ( my residence) just outside of city limits of Anacortes= RVP; S-F-G= soaring, flapping, and gliding. Northern Goshawk= NG; OT= observation time; EOB= elevation of bird. Observation time is not a factor when it comes to identification. In other words, identification usually is accomplished with 3-4 seconds of observation- that is with raptors in flight. And this is what nearly all my sightings of Goshawks have been; in flight.

Lay of the land

Mount Erie is a proterbance on the landscape at Anacortes. Within the area are 5 glacial lakes. Mount Erie can be seen from at least 30 miles away. Below Mount Erie is Scimitar Ridge. This ridge travels northward into Anacortes. Below Scimitar Ridge is Pioneer Trails RV Park. The Fern Hill Cemetery adjoins the RV park. The cemetery affords near- panoramic views. At the same level (elevation) as the RV park is the Gibraltar Road Quarry. Dropping down (steeply) from the RV park (quarry), (cemetery), is Similk Bay and the back end of the golf course. 2 miles toward the north, at bay level is Fidalgo Bay RV Park. Over looking the RV park is Scimitar Ridge. I call all of these areas (except Fidalgo RV Park) as one contiguous area for NG to hunt within. This area is composed of thousand's of square acres. NG will hunt in areas 5 miles from their nesting sites; they also will hunt 5 miles from their southern- wintering quarters (roosting areas). This information is from my personal experiences with NG.

Insights of nesting Goshawks

10 July 2006; Fidalgo Bay RV Resort is at the base of a ridge line- which is a continuation of Scimitar Ridge. This area is north of and down hill from Pioneer Trails RV Park (my residence). As an aside- my insights relating to the absence of NG during the nesting season, and then the re- appearance after fledging, were from my insights of 13 years ago, in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I mean- it is logical to assume both male and female (adult nester's) will stay as close to the nesting area as possible. At least that is my observations relating to NG. Yet, I have never seen a NG nest!

Goshawks on the nest probability

10 July 2006 4:30 PM. RVP
1 female Goshawk; F and S. EOB= about 200 feet. OT= 1-2 minutes.
Again reflect on my insights of June 9, relating to the interval of May 19- June 9. Now reflect again- this time from the interval of May 19 until July 10. I was in the field every day - except for rainy days, and had only 3 daily sightings. What will probably happen now, or start to happen within the next week or so, will be that I will be seeing NG on many of my daily observations. And weather patterns show: these days will not be interrupted by rainy weather. Also, it is possible the the owl population (predation) can affect the raptor population. And of course , human predation can affect raptor populations. It was in summer 2004, when a Red-Tailed Hawk (mature female) was injured and happened to land at Fidalgo Bay RV Resort. This bird happened to be shot, and was subsequently euthanized by a veterinarian.

my blog principles

I will NOT respond to any questions or comments that are addressed to this entire blog site. If you wish to join me in the field - cell (360 420 9320).

1 male NG

9 June 2006 3 PM. Fern Hill Cemetery
1 male NG; F-G and S. EOB= 150-200 feet. OT= about 1-2 minutes.( This is an indication of quantity of NG in the area - a very low quantity.) It also shows that NG are on the nest, because of the lack of sightings (from May 19 until June 9). I realize my sightings are not based on science- because I am only one person, and can only be in one general area at only one time. And I am only looking (observing) for a limited amount of time.

1 female NG

19 May 2006 3:15 PM. Anacortes Hospital
1 Female NG; 3/4 mile west of Anacortes Hospital. The bird was F and G. The bird was attacked by a Raven; both birds were in same area for about 1 minute. Then another Raven was added to the attack. They pushed away from the position, and another Raven was added. The 3 Ravens pushed the NG away and downward. OT= 4 minutes.

15 minutes of flight

5 May 2006 1:25 PM. RVP
1 male NG; over Scimitar Ridge. The bird was soaring and came eastward, then went northward, toward Fidalgo Bay. EOB= 500-800 feet, and was yet in the air when I walked away. The bird was well out of naked eye range, so at times I was viewing the bird at over 1 mile away. I returned to the site 10 minutes later, and saw a mature female NG, with a large area of white, under tail coverts. The bird was flying at slow speed; leisurely flapping. the bird had long, lanky wings, very similar to a Harrier. OT= about 5 minutes. The bird went down, and at same elevation appeared the male NG; F-G, and S. The male had a dark dorsal area. OT= 5 minutes. The female had buffy under body - I did not see the under wing. I also did not see the ventral area, with enough direct sunlight, to say if the bird was the remarkable female I saw in February 2005.

My mantra

I do not care what you have NOT seen. I do not care to know, that you have lived on Lopez Island, for 50 years and have never seen a Goshawk.

1 male NG

3 May 2006 11:00 AM.
1 male NG; F-G, low over trees on the side of Scimitar Ridge. OT= 30 seconds. The bird was in a strong hunting mode; bright sun. ALSO, 1 PM. - RVP; 1 male NG; OT= 20 seconds. The bird was in hunting mode.

1 mature female Goshawk

18 April 2006 8:30 AM. Fern Hill Cemetery
1 mature female NG; cutting across the cemetery, at 40 feet elevation. The bird was F and G. OT= 20 seconds.

15 April 2006 12:05 PM. RVP
1 NG; EOB= 500-800 feet; the bird was near Whistle Lake. Then at 12:10, another, or the same NG. The bird was a male; EOB= 300-500 feet, and 10 degrees off my zenith. Also in the same area was 1 Bald Eagle, and 2 RT. Hawks. Temps were cool- no breeze, overcast.

1 Goshawk

12 April 2006 1:05 PM. Fidalgo Bay RV Resort
1 NG; probably male; flapping and soaring. EOB= about 200 feet; OT= 30 seconds.
